Girls and jambands March 26, 2001 |

Monday, 26 March 2001 |
Hi! I just read in your magazine that if a girl can prove she's a jamband fan, she gets a free T-shirt. Well, I'm a girl! I'm a huge dead fan, I've been listening to them since I was 12. I'm 18 now- unfortunately I never got a chance to see them live though I did just recently see Ratdog in Nov. I do believe it was. also I got Phil Lesh tickets for April 25 in Pittsburgh.
I've seen String Cheese too- String Cheese rocks, I love em! I am planning on catching them again in Columbus, Ohio on April 27 hopefully. Oh I also listen to the Recipe, moe., Keller Williams, Deep Banana Blackout, etc.
Oh and I'm going to the All Good Festival- May 18. I'm hooked on jam bands- it basically is the only kind of music that I listen to now, though I still branch out, ya know. Anyway. I hope this proves that I'm a jam band fan,
thanks!
peace

Steve,
I read your article in the new issue. I am a girl who is into the jamband scene. Please may I have a T-shirt? I don't know what kind of proof you need. Ticket, stubs, photos? Or you can just take my word for it. If you want to give me a T-shirt I will take it gladly. Thanks a lot! I'll try to bring some more female friends to shows.

Women on the jamband scene March 26, 2001 |
|

Monday, 26 March 2001 |
What's up Steve,
I just got my new issue of Relix today and felt I had to comment on the No Women on the Jambands Scene piece. I agree with you that there is definitely a lack of women on the scene, but I have noticed that there is also a lack of cultural diversity. . . I have been going to shows since 1994 (first Phish show then) and have definitely seen changes in the crowds, as far as more trouble brewing and that sort of thing, but I also have noticed a rise in women attending. Granted, there still aren't that many at shows.
I started off seeing Phish (when a MALE friend introduced me to the music:) and have since seen a number of "jambands" and have fallen in love with the String Cheese Incident. I have seen them from all over the Northeast to Colorado to Arcata, California. I live in Ithaca, New York so I get to catch great music all the time (not only here but also in Albany--Buffalo--all over). I don't know if this will get me a T-shirt or make me sound crazy but I have driven to Boston to see Medeski, Martin, and Wood (after catching a spectacular show in Geneva) for one night. I've seen Phish all over and around 90+ times, including flying out to San Francisco to catch the Shoreline shows. My car is 3 1/2 years old and has almost 100,000 miles on it from traveling to see these bands. . .All I want for Christmas is a 10 pack of blanks! (no burner for me)...I've driven through blizzards and toughed out being horribly sick to see Phish.
I love going to these shows because I love music and get inspired every time I watch Trey make his hands move in un-human ways, every time I feel Travis's energy radiating out from his drums and percussion toys, every time I hear Phil's voice and bass bring back so much spirit. I really enjoy great music and talented people. I love how I feel at a show-just being free and taking in everything happening around me, not having to worry about life but just loving it. I love the fact that when I was a sophomore in high school I got through a tremendously hard week by thinking about the fact that in a week I would get to see the Dead in Philly.
Anyway, I don't know why more women don't attend. Maybe they don't like the primitive conditions that can occur on tour. Maybe they don't think Fishman is hot enough to spend money to look at and jump up and down in front of in hopes of getting backstage. Maybe the songs are too long, with too few lyrics, and too spiritual to captivate their minds. I don't know. I do know that I have traveled with guys over 90% of the time while other friends who were girls stayed home to do something or other.
So clothe me! clothe me! I'll be a walking billboard for your magazine and love it because you guys do a wonderful job and produce a great magazine.
