At one time I was an avid Relix reader. However, in the last few years, it's just gone downhill, and I lost interest. Nothing was changing, nothing new, nothing exciting. When I saw the new issue, I was impressed! Very impressed. Great articles, great stories, I love the artwork and photos.

Jamband community Print E-mail

I have been an avid supporter of the jamband community and recently I have been hearing a lot of bands say that they don't want to be called "jambands." Now I am hearing that the term jamband is not good enough for the Grateful Dead. What's next, the Rolling Stones saying that they're not a rock and roll band?
I know it is a time-honored tradition for musicians to say that their music is not like anything else out there and that their sound is beyond description, but I think that avoiding the jamband label makes no sense. I believe that the reason jambands don't like the label is because it comes with immediate comparisons to the Grateful Dead.
I believe the term jamband describes a type of music that is filled with talented musicians who can play in a wide range of styles and improvise with the greatest of ease. When going to see a jamband, you will know that the show you see is special and that it is not some rehearsed setlist that is played over and over again as a band travels from town to town. Also, the fans have a greater appreciation for music and the history of music. Your average MTV listener wouldn't know a Miles Davis tune if it slapped him or her in the face, but people who listen to jambands are more likely to have heard Miles or Coltrane or any variety of talented musicians because what it boils down to is that jamband music is about the music. It's not about the image, it's not about mosh pits or gang signs or drugs, it is about going to shows and hearing talented musicians playing good music in an atmosphere where there is a great vibe and a true appreciation for talent. Bands that avoid the jamband label because they don't want to be categorized or compared to the Dead are sadly mistaken because they make it harder for this kind of music to gain any respect.
How can a critic respect a category of music if all of the artists who play that kind of music try to bail out? I am in a band that improvises and plays longer songs like the Dead or Phish and I am thrilled when people call us a jamband, compare us to the Dead, and put us in the same category as so many great bands. It would be great if other people felt the same way because jamband is not a derogatory term. So wear the jamband label with pride and respect because it can only help us gain respect for our type of music.
Keep it kind

She's a female, and a head! March 31, 2001 Print E-mail

I just read your Relix article (Can Someone Please Explain Why There Are So Few Women on the Jamband Scene? Relix Magazine, April 2001, in which Relix publisher Steve Bernstein promised to send free Relix T-shirts to the first 20 women who responded).
I have the same question... why are there so few ladies who like jambands? I think it's because men are more likely then women to follow an "alternative" scene. Proof that I'm female and that I'm a head? Well, I was reading Relix.
If that's not enough, I have been touring with phish since I was 15. Now I'm a 21 year old festival junkie and I love moe., the Disco biscuits, Widespread Panic, and well, a whole lot more! I stitch clothes that I sell in lots, I also sell them online. Oh, I also think I'm the only female taper. I record on a DAT among a sea full of men. So if you've already heard from 20 female jam band fans, I doubt you've heard from 20 female tapers!
A jamband with a lady... the recipe. Not only do they have a female singer who can really wail, but a female fiddle player as well. They're Appalachian hillbilly disco. Yee haw!!! So, do I get a shirt?

I am a true jamband fan. Without music and the shows I would be a very bored little dancer. I am currently (for the last two years) a HUGE Keller Williams fan (also the cheese, yonder mountain, umphrey's mcgee, and many more). I don't really know how to "prove" how big of a fan I am besides to invite you over to check out my tapes. Have a grate one
