It's me, the girl you have been looking for! The one that follows all the Jam bands. We do exist and I am here to prove it.
I agree that there are few of us, but it doesn't stop us from following bands like Phish, String Cheese, ekoostik hookah and Widespread Panic, to name a few. I agree that I enjoy the short lines to the ladies room and lots of guys running around with no shirts and always a smile and hug to give.
The experience is a happening. From the parking lot to the encore.
Hope to see you at a show real soon. I am going to see Phil Lesh on April 18th in Pittsburg and String Cheese in Columbus, Ohio on the 20th. Loved the article. Party on!

Steve, I am saddened by your distorted Reflections in the April/May issue. I am a woman. I am on the scene. I read your magazine. Don't forget about us ladies in your layout. Send me a T-shirt and the extra(s)(be it one or nineteen) you might be holding onto so I can hand them out to
all the other women I see at shows. What shows do you go to where you find a
lack of women?? Perhaps you are failing to take in the scene... The women are all around you; open your eyes to see the world!!
The simplicity or the complexity of a song depends on the individual, not the gender of the individual.Reconsider your reflection and launch a layout on females in the jamband scene. Investigate and I'm sure that you'll prove yourself wrong. |

Hey now Steve. Just wanted to drop you a note in response to your article in the April/May issue of Relix. I am a true jamband fan. How do I prove it to you? Well,
last year, I went to four Widespread Panic shows with my sister (from Minnesota to Ohio). This has become a little tradition of ours and I am sure the two of us will hit another string of shows this summer. So not only am I a true fan but my sister is too. In the last month, I have been to a lot of local shows; I saw Galactic, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, The Big Wu, and The Slip. And then there is JazzFest. I am planning that trip in May. There are many awesome women involved in the jamband scene here in
Minnesota. I would love to be turned onto a jamband of women. Great idea! Hope to see ya at some shows. Peace & Panic,

I don't know why there aren't that many women involved; but then I don't know why jambands never get anywhere in England, either, and I'm both English and a woman. There has to be something better than the explanation I heard recently that women don't become guitar heroes because "when they get premenstrual it's a bit uncomfortable to hold the instrument." I mean, really... It could be cultural, though. Men still tend to be brought up to define themselves by what they do, but women
still tend to be expected to create an identity out of what their partner does (which in musical terms becomes the boyfriend-in-a-band syndrome). The possible ugliness of potential female bandmembers
aside (and I don't see why that should be
>relevant), I think this is the women-in-rock question reappearng in slightly funkier hemp-derived clothes. I love guitars. I love guitar stores. Time away from music is time ill spent in my opinion. And I don't think I'm particularly ugly, but I do find
that some men have an ambivalent reaction to findng out I share their obsession. And I often feel that I have to work hard to get past the distance imposed by my femaleness. Anyway, I hope you've run out of T-shirts by now. It would be so depressing if you haven't. |
