Feeling the pain April 15, 2001 Print E-mail

Hello Steve. I'm not sure exactly how to prove to you that I am a true jamband fan since everyone at one time or another has debated what marks a true fan. I can say, though, that I appreciated your article. I fell into the scene back in 1992 completely by accident. I had made a run to Chicago with an ex-boyfriend so he could do some dirty deeds (I was a naïve 17 back then) and ended up going into the Cabaret Metro. I didn't know when I left Indianapolis and skipped my senior prom that I would end up fostering my own love and addicted relationship with a band called "Fish," but with a Ph... Anyway, it is now almost 10 years later, and I have to say I still can't answer the question "What kind of music do you listen to?" People don't get the term jambands, and coming from a girl is even stranger. I usually get pegged as the girl who tags along because her boyfriend is into it. It's difficult to make friends in this scene and not be stereotyped as just another girl who thinks those little rainbow-colored bears are soooo cute... I have to say also that the gentlemen of the scene don't help either--they never take me seriously and hey, I don't blame them. When you do see girls around they are usually worried about getting their tie-dye dirty, or scratching their new Birkenstocks... I don't mean to sound so negative, but I feel your pain. I wish someone would explain to me why there are so few women on the jamband scene.

Hey Now Steve! I think that I am the only female out of my group that reads Relix. It is one of my favorite magazines. I have been in our scene for about 7-8 years now and I go to all my shows and festivals with one girl and about 10 guys! That is why I joined the Phunky Bitches. I am a regional representative for Central PA. I think it is also the main reason that The Recipe is one of my favorite bands! ~*~smiles~*~

My husband is an avid jamband listenerApril 13, 2001 Print E-mail

My husband is an avid jamband listener and this is how we met. I was a jamband follower since my high school days and never miss an opportunity to see one.
I used to go to Max Creek shows by myself and all types of folk gigs. I'm the one who turned my husband on to Phish (being an ex-coaster from the northwest hills of Connecticut, I knew of Phish before the "heads" of Phish heads began). Zero is cool and it's a family gig for us. Phil is one of my all time heroes. It's a part of my life. I even have taken a tape deck and taped shows. Yes--unheard of--a female who tapes!
I am a strong supporter of women in all types of music. If we are to be accepted as a force, we need to be a part of the whole and even out in the field. I think that we are raised (even in this day) to think that men will take care of us. But I feel that we (women) need to stand up and be counted.
This is not a plea for women's rights. There are a lot of us who have stayed at home and watched other peoples' kids so that they could go to shows. Maybe men seem to have more "free time" on their hands. :)
I think women feel intimidated by the masses of men that show up to these gigs and are overwhelmed by it. Plus, "Mom" always said to be careful; a woman alone is a victim and it's dangerous.
There will always be men who think that women do not need this in their lives or that it's a joke. Not the men in my life. Never have we gone to shows that I felt one of the few, but[rather] unique that this is a part of me that makes up part of a whole. I am seeing more women than ever before. I think girls need to be encouraged to develop their musical talents just like men. I play drums(not a girl's instrument!).
