Hi Steve. I may not be one of your first 20 women respondents (I hope I am so I can get a really cool Relix T-shirt and show it to my jealous friends!) but I am a lover of all passionate music - jambands rising to the top. My summers are definitely not complete without an absolutely free dance on the grass inspired by Phish playing until my heart is content. AHHHH SWEET MUSIC. The same for the members' other musical projects (i.e. Pork Tornado, who I just enjoyed in Philadelphia... actually, their final song included all girl jam-fans inspired to get their groove on with the members on stage. There were quite a few, I think enough to make your magazine retract your statement on the lack of women on the scene. I cannot deny your correctness in magnifying the lack of women playing the scene. Unfortunately, I can't complain about what is out there. It's grand! Let your arms swing and your mind run...

I think Relix looks awesome. I first started reading it during the early eighties, and it has been a part of my life since. The scene is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, but many of us are a little older now. I enjoy reading a magazine that has grown as I have. Keep up the good work. Ignore anyone who says to drop some of the GD coverage. They got everything started, and out of all the bands today, they have affected the most so far. Give credit where credit is due. Lastly, I want to mention a band called The Ordinary Way. They were reviewed last year in Relix, but haven't seen much on them lately. They tour constantly, and have really impressed me on many levels. Their shows take me to a place I don’t go often, and it seems many out there agree with me due to the fact that the crowds just keep getting bigger. Have you heard of them? If so, what do you think? Have a great day, and thank you for all your hard work.

Not just a boys' club April 29, 2001 Print E-mail

You point out a lack of female fans and in the essay's headline say, "And onstage? Forget it!" Perhaps this is partly a matter of a too narrow designation. I can think of several women who play music quite like that generally featured in Relix. What about Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball, or Shaun Murphy (the newest lead vocalist in Little Feat)? I would also point to Kim Gordon (Of Sonic Youth, who, while not R&B or folk-based, certainly improvise---jam---a lot), as well as the jazzy San Francisco duo Tuck & Patti. While perhaps a bit more stylistically polished than what some fans might think of as "real/people's" music, they, too, improvise, both vocally and instrumentally. Like most situations, women are here when you guys break out of the "boys club." Even in the "under-the-counterculture," men want to be the main players !

I picture a festival commemorating the life of Jerry Garcia. Starting Aug 1st and lasting till aug 9th. From his birthday to his assencion day. A festival of feasting for all the senses. Music, food, dancing, reconnecting with folks, and generally festicating. The festival of Garcia, or the f.o.g., will one day be bigger than wrestling, bigger than breast implants, bigger than guns or cigarettes!! Are you with me??
