Dear Relix, I've been enjoying your mag for about 8 years now. Love the coverage on GD, Phish, SCI etc. I would love to see more coverage on some newer smaller bands. Especially Soulive & Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, they rock! I'd encourage any reader to check them out if you already haven't. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents. Also, there are plenty of us ladies out
there. :) |

I just wanted to comment on your article asking the question, "Where are the women in the Jamband scene?" Well, years ago, I read an article by Chicago Tribune columnist, Mary Schmich in which she wondered about the appeal of the Grateful Dead. In short, she stated she did not get it because the band was not sexy. Garcia and co. were plain looking, they did not sing about romance, and they never hit the gossip columns with their dating habits like Mick or Madonna. Now, not to be insulting, but perhaps this is a truism with women and pop/rock music in general. Sex appeal is more of a drawing card for women; musical virtuosity is the pulling power for men. Let's look at the scene: SCI, WSP, Phish, BT, TDB, moe. I could go on but none of these bands are visually appealing, nor are they particularly romantic. It really is about the playing, which like Prog Rock or Heavy Metal, draws in men. This is not meant to include all women and men in a sweeping stereotype. I also must say that I see a lot of women in the scene and am a bit bewildered by your concern. Good Luck on the fresh start. Olo. p.s.perhaps you should have at least 1 male editor!!!

Hi, Steve! I would like respond to the Reflections on p. 56 of the May issue... I am a rabid Phish phan and have been for seven or eight years. I've been to 45 shows and have even marked my body for life with the Phish symbol. It is true that not a lot of women are on "the scene" but you are forgetting the Phunky Bitches, an organization for the ladies of Phish where we can talk about shows and get help when needed. I, personally, am the lead singer of a jamband and write most of the lyrics for it. If you don't believe me, check out our website at cosmicpond.com. And as a side note, I am secretly happy that there are not a lot of women in jambands... it makes ours more memorable! Anyway, I will be patiently awaiting my T-shirt. Thanks, Steve! I wear a medium.

I would like to submit my girlfriend Sam as a girl would definitely hang in the jamband scene. Hell, she's fan of the most hardcore of all jambands--Gov't Mule. Look in the letters section of this month's Hittin' The Note to see what I mean. Incidentally, kudos on the new look. I haven't read Relix in about 8 years. Don't listen to the kids who say no articles on the Dead. I enjoyed the look at The Vault. I've written for Unbroken Chain, Deadbase and the GD Tape Compendium and would be happy to contribute to the new Relix. Incidentally, the garbage plate in Rochester is served by Nick Tahou's Hots.
