Balance of power May 15, 2001 Print E-mail

Steve, I was surprised to see that most of the editors for Relix are women, yet most of the readers are men. That seems a little odd. I make clothing for "hippies" and find that most of my customers are women. Maybe that just says that men don't care about what the hell they wear, I don't know. That leaves me with the impression that there are a lot of women on the jamband scene. I recently went to a Leftover Salmon concert and there were actually more women than men. I do agree though that there are a lot more men out there than women, but I think women are starting to get into it more. Don't worry, we'll catch up sooner or later!

I be a female jam band musician! Read your summary touching on the subject of women in music, more specifically women jamband sort of people. I am a blues singer in Tempe with a reputation for putting jambands together for my shows. I am also friends with at least one other female in this area who also does the jamband thing. I think the idea of having a show featuring people like us would be wildly successful and a lot o' fun. Many of us would find a way to show up if someone could organize such a thing.

Do I qualify? May 14, 2001 Print E-mail

Hey, this is Michelle (no, I am not a guy with a feminine name). I love the jamband scene and yes it really does suck that it is more male oriented. The majority of my friends are guys because they are more fun to hang out with than girls. Most girls just care tooooo much about their appearence, clothes, what's trendy and boys. But anyway, I luv the Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, Strangefolk, moe., etc. I also luv goin to a couple of bars around and hearin some local jambands like Juggling Suns and Scarecrow Collection (I'm from Jersey). I am a member of jambands.com, jambase.com, hgmn, and others. I am goin to the All Good music festival this weekend also.... so do I qualify as a true jamband fan??

I just wanted to let you know I did indeed read your article about the lack of women at jamband shows. They are my absolute favorite type of show and there usually is quite a line at the bathroom as well. Anyway, if I'm one of the first twenty to respond I could sure use a T-shirt! Happy grooving!!
