Staying 'high' with the South Austin Jug Band

One of Texas’ most original string bands, the South Austin Jug Band has been a Ski Jam staple since its inception. After ringing in the New Year at Stubbs BBQ in Austin, the group will head to the mountains for an extended string of shows in Steamboat Springs, CO, including the 2006 edition of Ski Jam. Below, SAJB singer/guitarist James Hyland catches up with Relix about Ski Jam, Austin City Limits and “getting high” in the Rockies.

Keeping Time with Billy Martin

Best known as Medeski, Martin and Wood’s rhythmic backbone, Billy Martin has been a fixture on the groove music circuit for well over 15 years. After a busy fall tour, which included MMW’s annual Halloween performance at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, Martin spent December working on a number of side projects, including two new albums and a solo drum gig which found him setting John G. Neihardt’s Black Elk to music. After a short holiday break, the busy drummer will regroup with John Medeski and Chris Wood for a three-night Japanese tour culminating with a New Year’s performance at Tokyo’s Differ Ariake, and then head west to Steamboat Springs, CO to headline Ski Jam.

In the four decades since scoring his first international smash, “Gimme Some Lovin’,” Steve Winwood has built one of the most stunning resumés in rock history: As a teen, he co-founded the hit-making pop/soul act The Spencer Davis Group, quitting a few years later to form the revered Traffic. When tension arose, he formed the first rock supergroup, Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech, before reviving Traffic and then embarking on a chart-topping solo career that soared in the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
