Jack Johnson has confirmed the U.S.
leg of his world tour in support of the chart-topping Sleep Through the
Static. The Hawaiian-born musician, filmmaker and surfer will headline a
striking number of festivals over the next few months, including Coachella,
Bonnaroo, All Points West and Outside Lands,
as well as his own Kokua Festival. Johnson will also hit a number of
amphitheaters, with Rogue Wave, Mason Jennings, Neil Halsted, Money Mark and
Culver City Dub Collective featuring Paula Fuga opening various legs of his
journey.
Sleep Through the Static, the first album to credit ALO keyboardist Zach
Gill as a fulltime member of Johnsons band, debuted at #1 in the UK, Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Singapore and on Japan’s International Chart,
while in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, The Netherlands, Sweden, and
Taiwan, the album debuted in the Top 5. In addition, Johnson is launching All
At Once in partnership with non-profits worldwide and will host a Village Green
at each stop on his tour. All donations made by fans to these organizations
online or at the concerts will be matched by his charity, the Johnson Ohana
Charitable Foundation (up to $2,500 per organization).
Fans will also be able to offset their carbon emissions that result from
traveling to the show two ways: as an extra $.50 opt-in at the time of online
ticket purchase, or via an exclusive Jack Johnson offset sticker (available at
the show). Proceeds from these contributions will go to the All At Once
Carbon Management Portfolio, an offset portfolio created especially for this
tour by a team of climate scientists to address the two largest contributors to
global warming: burning fossil fuel and deforestation.
Johnsons summer tour will kick off June 13 at Noblesville, IN’s Verizon
Wireless Music Center and hit sheds in most major North American markets,
including Cuyahoga Falls, OH (6/17), Clarkston, MI (6/18), East Troy (6/21),
Somerset, WI (6/22), Oro, ON (6/3), Mansfield, MA (8/6), Camden, NJ (8/7),
Raleigh, NC (8/12), Atlanta (8/13),
Bonner Springs, KS (8/15), Morrison, CO (8/17), Salt Lake City, UT (8/18), St.
Helens, OR (8/20), Vancouver, BC (8/21) and George, WA (8/22).
Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson will headline the next
multi-band summer gathering, the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival.
The multi-faceted, three-day festival will take place at San
Francisco's Golden Gate Park from August 22-24, 2008, featuring an
eclectic mix of rock, blues, reggae, jazz, hip-hop, world, soul,
Latin and electronic music on five different stages. The event is
organized by Another Planet and Bonnaroo masterminds Superfly and a
portion of every ticket sold will directly benefit Golden Gate Park.
The world-famous park has hosted a number of mega-events over the
years, including Peter Gabriel's WOMAD Festival, the Tibetan Freedom
Concert, the Guinness Fleadh Festival and the Love and the Laughter &
Music tribute to Bill Graham, as well as performances by Pearl Jam,
Neil Young and most recently the Dave Matthews Band.
The Brakes have signed with Hyena
records and will release their debut album, Tale
of Two Cities, on May 6. As previously reported, the longtime Relix
favorites, who were profiled in Jambands.com’s New Groove of the Month section,
recorded their first album at New York’s
Knitting Factory and Philadelphia’s
Milkboy Coffee throughout the spring of 2007. The album will feature the tracks
“Into The Ground,” “Supermarket,” “Big Money,” “Cigarette in the Rain,” “Tale
of Two Cities,” “State of the Union,” “Empty
House,” “Danger Blues,” “Boat Trip,” “Song of Imponderables,” “Who am I to be”
and “Sister Mary.” A handful of tracks are also currently streaming on The
Brakes’ official homepage. The group will celebrate the album’s release by
playing a series of shows with Jackie Greene and the Mother Hips’ Tim Bluhm,
stretching from a April 29 appearance at New York’s
Highline Ballroom to a May 2 stop at Towson,
MD’s Recher Theatre.
Animal Collective will follow up last year’s breakthrough Strawberry
Jam with a new 4 song EP,
Water
Curses. The EP’s tracks are said to have a more stripped down feel
than most of Animal Collective’s recent work, including the new song “Cobwebs,”
which is partially inspired by Al Green. Other tracks include the opening “Water Curses,” the seven-minute “Street Flash”
and the spacey “Seal Eyeing.” The group will support Water Curses on the road with a brief
jaunt to Japan from March
16-18 and with an appearance at Indio,
CA’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts
Festival in April. For more on Animal Collective please read our recent
interview with the group in the digital issue of Relix .
Even as the summer festival season looks more competitive than
ever, Noise Pop and Another Planet have confirmed that the second annual Treasure
Island Music Festival will take place on September 20 and 21on the historic
Treasure Island in the middle of the San
Francisco Bay.
Organized by the creators of the Noise Pop Festival, one of
the nation’s longest-running music festivals, and Another Planet Entertainment,
nationally established independent concert promoter based in Berkeley, CA,
the Treasure Island Music Festival will mix a variety of rock, indie and
electronic acts. “Thankfully the
response to last year’s event was overwhelmingly positive,” adds Noise Pop
co-owner Jordan Kurland said in a statement, “Our goal with the second
installment of the festival remains the same - to present a diverse line-up of
artists that you will not find at any other festival in a setting that is
impossible to replicate.”
A full lineup of bands and activities will be confirmed in
the coming days. Last year’s lineup featured Modest Mouse, Thievery Corporation,
Spoon, M.I.A., Built to Spill, Clay Your Hands Say Yeah, Two Gallants and West
Indian Girl, among others.
