Jazz g reat Ornette Coleman will receive a lifetime achievement
award at the 2007 Grammy Awards. At 76, Coleman, a noted saxophonist and
composer, is one of the forefathers of improvisations music. "It's a great
achievement for those who play improvised music to be recognized by the Grammy
committee,” Coleman says. “I am very honored." Earlier this year Coleman
released his latest studio album, Sound
Grammar, which received a nod in the "Best Jazz Instrumental Album by
an Individual or Group” category. Coleman is profiled in the February/March
issue of Relix.
In other Grammy news, Groove Collective, who has appeared in
several past issues of Relix, received a nod in the Best Contemporary Jazz
album category. The group’s recent album, People,
People, Music, Music was released on
Savoy Jazz Worldwide earlier this year. “It took us about a year-and-a-half to
make this record, so we fleshed some of these songs out on the road---in
public,” percussionist Chris Theberge recently told Relix." “We are plugged into the taping community, so we listen back
to all our shows and in rehearsal we will learn an idea that took place at one
of our shows. For instance, on our new record we combined a few songs and ideas
to create some new songs specifically from the disc. ‘Tito’ was actually a remake
of a few Tito Puente songs. We took half of a few songs we know and created a
really cool medley.”
