Jazz gcolemanreat Ornette Coleman will receive a lifetime achievement award at the 2007 Grammy Awards. At 76, Coleman, a noted saxophonist and composer, is one of the forefathers of improvisations music. "It's a great achievement for those who play improvised music to be recognized by the Grammy committee,” Coleman says. “I am very honored." Earlier this year Coleman released his latest studio album, Sound Grammar, which received a nod in the "Best Jazz Instrumental Album by an Individual or Group” category. Coleman is profiled in the February/March issue of Relix.

In other Grammy news, Groove Collective, who has appeared in several past issues of Relix, received a nod in the Best Contemporary Jazz album category. The group’s recent album, People, People, Music, Music  was released on Savoy Jazz Worldwide earlier this year. “It took us about a year-and-a-half to make this record, so we fleshed some of these songs out on the road---in public,” percussionist Chris Theberge recently told Relix." “We are plugged into the taping community, so we listen back to all our shows and in rehearsal we will learn an idea that took place at one of our shows. For instance, on our new record we combined a few songs and ideas to create some new songs specifically from the disc. ‘Tito’ was actually a remake of a few Tito Puente songs. We took half of a few songs we know and created a really cool medley.”

Three of the last decade's biggest rock names collaborated Saturday night on the final date of U2's two-year Vertigo tourpearljamfinal. For the final night, U2 recruited fellow arena rockers Pearl Jam to open its performance at Honolulu's Aloha Stadium. Pearl Jam dotted its short set with hits, including 1990s chart toppers "Even Flow," "Better Man" and "Alive," as well as the Who's "Baba O'Riley." Reprising their recent Australian collaboration, Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready joined U2 for a reworked version of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" during the group's second encore. Earlier this fall, the two rock titans reworked the lyrics to  Young's 1980s anthem for an anti-poverty concert. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong also made a surprise appearance with U2 on its cover of the Skids' "The Saints Are Coming" (a song the two bands recently recorded for a charity single). U2 closed its world tour on a tender note, offering "All I Want Is You." According to reports, U2 will return to the studio in 2007 to begin work on its next album.
