James Brown, 1933-2006 Print E-mail

In the documentary film Bittersweet Motel, Phish jokingly characterized a particular  performance as “almost as funky as  James Brown on his worst night.” Indeed, Brown, who passed away on Christmas day, in his native Georgia looms large and a master showman and progenitor of funk. Physicians diagnosed “Soul Brother Number One” with pneumonia just few days ago.

Brown, had been recording and performing for nearly a decade when his 1963 Live at the Apollo release cemented his reputation as a vital if occasionally volatile R&B artist.  His hard-edged jazz-fueled soul eventually became the blueprint for funk, defined as his signature sound in the 1970’s. Brown’s appeal crossed demographics and traditional genres as songs such as “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Cold Sweat (Part 1)” and “Get On the Good Foot” garnered significant airplay in multiple formats.  The "Godfather of Soul," who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with its inaugural class, performed with a flair and panache that earned him the respect of  from artists and audiences alike, while he toured with such top notch sidemen as:  Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Starks,  and Bootsy Collins.

Brown remained an feisty individualist throughout his personal and professional  life. He preferred to be addressed as Mr. Brown and in a moment that appears on the film 270 Miles From Graceland, he castigates Relix/Jambands.com reporter Jeff Waful, who had referred to him as James during a press conference.

One of Brown’s other sobriquets was the “Hardest-Working Man in Show Business,” so it is not surprising that from his hospital bed, he had pledged to perform as scheduled in New York City’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It is likely that some form of tribute  will now appear in his stead. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized although he most certainly will be buried near his Augusta home.

Over the past year Jerry Joseph (Little Women, Stockholm Syndrome) has found himself performing in multiple contexts, whether it be as a solo or duo act or even as a member of Zero. Next week he will return to the stage with the Jackmormons, the band that has been his primary focus over the past few years. However, rather than mark the New Year with a series of shows in the United States, Joseph and his group will travel to Costa Rica. This version of the Jackmormons will be a quintet, as Joseph also has enlisted Steve James (guitars, bass, vocals), Brad Rosen (drums, vocals), Steve Drizos (percussion) and Lewi Longmire (bass, guitars, vocals). The group will perform electric sets at Mango Real in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica on December 30 and 31. Then, after a day of rest on New Year’s Day, an acoustic version of the group will hit the stage on January 2.  Both of the Jackmormons’ Steves also back Joseph on his latest release, April Nineteenth. The disc, recorded this summer in Portland, Orgeon, draws on both older material and new compositions, with guest appearances from Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists), David Lipkind (I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House), Little Sue, Jim Brunberg and others.

Over the past few years, Robert Randolph and the Family Band’s music has accompanied both basketball and football telecasts. A few years ago the group’s performance of "We Got Hoops" debuted as the NBA theme song. This past year the band provided the theme for ABC’s Saturday night college football series. Next month, Randolph and his group will extend their ambit into the hockey rink. On January 24th, the group will open the 55th NHL All-Star Game in Dallas, with a live version of “Thrill of It.”  Randolph and the Family Band will be in town a few days earlier and on the 21st will headline the NHL All- Star Concert to benefit The Leary Firefighters Foundation.

A number of the musicians whose memorabilia is for sale via the Wolfgang’s Vault website, have brought suit against the owner, William E. Sagan. Sagan, purchased the collection of legendry concert promoter Bill Graham and began offering the items for purchase at the site, which takes its moniker from Graham’s birth name, Wolfgang Grjonca.

The Los Angeles Times has reported that a number of artists including the Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, Led Zeppelin and the Doors are seeking an injunction to prevent Wolfgang's Vault from selling any concert memorabilia or live recordings. The artists also are seeking the profits from past sales.

The Doors’ Ray Manzarek told the paper, "If people are buying something because it says the Doors on it then, you know, you should give the Doors some of the money. Look, I need to pay my electric bill. I play an electric keyboard."
