The Kings of Leon will make its Madison Square
Garden debut in early
2009. The quartet, which was first profiled in Relix back in 2003, has slowly
worked its way through the New York
club circuit and will headline the “world’s most famous arena” on January 29. “We
can look at each other and know that we’re not fuckin’ rock stars,” frontman
Caleb Followill told Relix at the time. “We’re a bunch of assholes who are just
lucky and getting to play music.” The group’s last area performance was an
intimate CD release party at New York’s
Webster Hall.
Kings of Leon will continue to support its fourth studio album, Only By the Night, at Las Vegas, NV’s
The Joint this Saturday.

One-time Relix cover subjects Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and Tenacious
D are among the acts scheduled to join the Beastie Boys’ Get Out and Vote tour.
The brief outing is scheduled to kick off in Richmond,
VA on October 28 and also make stops in St. Paul, MN on November
1 and Milwaukee, WI on November 2. These shows are timed with
the 2008 general elections, which will be held nationwide on November 4.
An eclectic mix of bands will join the Beastie Boys along
the way. In Richmond,
Johnson, Sheryl Crowe, Norah Jones and Santogold will support the trio, while Harper and Tenacious D will supply opening duties in St. Paul and Harper, Tenacious D and the duo David Crosby
and Graham Nash will support the group in Milwaukee.
Though the run of shows is simply intended to encourage voting among music fans,
the Beastie Boys openly support Barack Obama.
The Beastie Boys appeared on the December/January issue of
Relix . These three shows will likely be the group’s only live appearances
before 2009.

Yo La Tengo will ring in 2009 at Montclair, NJ’s
brand-new concert venue, the Wellmont Theatre. The Feelies have been confirmed
to open the show, Yo La Tengo’s first at the new Bowery Presents-promoted room.
The performance will be the New Jersey trio’s first New Year's performance since 2005 when New Year’s Eve coincided
with the group’s annual Chanukah performances at Hoboken, NJ’s
nearby Maxwell’s. There is currently no word on whether or not Yo La Tengo will
host its Chanukah shows this winter.
For many months, Yo La Tengo was rumored to open for My
Morning Jacket at New York’s Madison Square
Garden on New Year’s Eve.
Last year, My Morning Jacket singer Jim James sat in with Yo La Tengo during
its annual holiday run. Please visit www.yolatengo.com.
