Last night, Relix
Magazine hosted a party at the New York bar Niagara to celebrate the release of our November issue. Keeping
with Relix’s Magazine for Music slogan, the November issue features an eclectic mix of
profiles, including features on livetronica stars Sound Tribe Sector 9, non-partisan voter
registration group HeadCount, Leftover Salmon co-founder Drew Emmitt, blues singer
Joan Osborne, songwriting visionary Lucinda Williams and indie-rockers
Apollo Sunshine. Meanwhile, the issue’s cover story looks back on The Clash’s
historic performances at Shed Stadium with legendary rockers The Who.
In the extensive
feature, Managing Editor Wes Orshoski discusses the classic performances with
the help of musicians like Pete Townshend, David Johansen, Tom Morello and Jesse
Malin, along with the surviving members of The Clash. At last night’s Relix
party, Malin also showed off his DJ stills, spinning a mix of Clash and
Clash-inspired tunes with Orshoski. In addition to being a successful musician,
Malin co-owns Niagara, along with a number of other New York watering holes.

In March, Dr Pepper’s marketing team promised every American a free can of its soda if Guns n' Roses’ long-labored studio album Chinese Democracy was released before
the end of 2008. The only U.S.
citizens not invited to participate in the promotional campaign were former
Guns ‘n Roses guitarists Slash and Buckethead.
With Chinese Democracy’s
November 23 release date looming, Dr Pepper has finalized the details of its
unique marketing approach. According to
the company, fans must follow four steps to receive their free can of soda:
1. On the album’s
November 23, 2008 release date, go to www.drpepper.com
2. Register your
information to receive a coupon for one free 20-oz. Dr Pepper.
3. When your
coupon arrives, redeem it wherever Dr Pepper is sold.
4. Drink your Dr
Pepper slowly to experience all 23 flavors.
Dr's orders.
“We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr
Pepper with our album Chinese Democracy,
as for us, this came totally out of the blue,” Axel Rose said about Dr Pepper’s
publicity stunt in March. “If there is any involvement with this promotion by
our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time. And as some
of Buckethead’s performances are on our album, I’ll share my Dr Pepper with
him.”
Coupons will be available for only 24 hours, beginning at
12:01 AM EST on November 23. Participants should allow 4-6 weeks for a coupon to arrive. Coupons will expire on February 28,
2009. There is a limit of one coupon per
person. Full terms and conditions are available
at www.drpepper.com .

Jane’s Addiction’s classic lineup will reunite for an
intimate club gig at Los Angeles’
La Cita this evening. Last April, singer Perry Farrell, guitarist David Navarro
and drummer Stephen Perkins played their first show with bassist Eric Avery since
Jane’s Addiction originally parted ways in 1991. The performance took place at Los
Angeles' El Rey Theatre as part of the NME awards, where Jane’s Addiction was
honored with the Godlike Genius Award.
“I've chosen to reject the prospects of reuniting in the
past for personal and philosophical reasons. I have always considered reunions
to be a way to make a quick buck, and it sells short my own experience of it
the first time around," Avery said at the time. “The reason I started to
even consider this is because it's honoring the past instead of trying to
recreate it.”
Farrell, Navarro and Perkins have toured as Jane’s Addiction
a handful of times since 1991 with a variety of replacement bassists. The group’s
best-known sub is Navarro’s Red Hot Chili Peppers collaborator Flea.
Jane’s Addiction is expected to play a short set at the 390-capacity
La Cita bar this evening. In keeping with the group’s alt-rock roots, tickets to
the sold-out gig were only $5.
“We never know what the future has in store for us;
especially with this band,” Avery posted on his blog. “But, at least right now
Jane's Addiction has a future that one would have to call somewhat promising.
We are a great band.”
