It's July of 1987 and the Grateful Dead are taking a brief rest after completing their East Coast run with Bob Dylan. Earlier that month, In the Dark is released, becoming the biggest selling Dead album of all time. Garcia is still in relatively good health. The band's playing has continued to grow stronger. Steve Benes had an opportunity to interview Garcia on a muggy Friday.
