Phish to Release Fuego on June 24, Album Focuses on Collaborative Songwriting By Quartet
As previously reported, Phish have named their second full-length release since returning to the stage in 2009 Fuego. The Vermont Quartetâ€™s twelfth studio effort, which was produced by Bob Ezrin, is set for release on June 24 and will contain nine of the songs the group performed as part of their â€śWingsuitâ€ť set on Halloween in Atlantic City. Fuego will also include Page McConnellâ€™s â€śHalfway to the Moon,â€ť which the group debuted on June 19, 2010,
Most of the songs on the album are collaborations between the four members of Phish, though Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall co-wrote â€śSing Monica,â€ť â€śDevotion to a Dreamâ€ť and â€śWinterqueen,â€ť while Mike Gordon and Max Creek/Mike Gordon Band guitarist Scott Murawski are responsible for â€ś555.â€ť In addition, Don Hart, who previously worked with Anastasio on â€śTime Turns Elasticâ€ť arranged the horns on â€śWinterqueen.â€ť
According to a press release, the songs for Fuego took shape during a series of visits to The Barn, located just outside the band's hometown of Burlington, VT. Along with the hometown sessions, the band also recorded at Ronnieâ€™s Place and Anarchy Studios in Nashville, TN and Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. A variety of background vocalists and horn players also contributed to the album. The nine-minute version of â€śFuegoâ€ť was recorded during the bandâ€™s soundcheck on October 30, 2013 by longtime Phish collaborator Jon Altschiller.
â€śFor years, thereâ€™s been a distinct difference between how we did things live and how we did them in studio,â€ť notes Jon Fishman. â€śBut the way we go about things live, the way the musical ball is passed around, is now happening much more in the studio-not because weâ€™re trying to duplicate how we play on stage, just because this is how we operate as a band, period.â€ť
NPR announced the full tracklistâ€”which is listed belowâ€”and has also premiered â€śWaiting All Nightâ€ť from the bandâ€™s forthcoming release. The band will serve as the musical guest on Late Show with David Letterman on June 24.
Pre-orders for Fuego will be available today at Phish.com. The iTunes pre-order will launch tomorrow, May 15.
