Here’s Jeff Tweedy’s Response to a ‘Watch the Throne’ Style Album with Ryan Adams

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and Nels Cline’s Reddit AMA was fairly uneventful, with lots of dry responses typical of Tweedy’s brand of humor. One in particular struck a chord, so to speak, as a fan asked Tweedy if he would ever team up with Ryan Adams for a Watch The Throne collaborative album, referring to the landmark Jay Z/Kanye West project. His response provided the highlight of the entire session as he fired back, “Sure, and we could perform it standing on cubes at opposite ends of an arena.”

Tweedy’s response is fantastic, as Jay Z and Kanye did perform part of their Watch the Throne Tour on cubes on opposite sides of the arena. The quip probably doesn’t reignite the Adams/Tweedy rivalry, but it does recall a rather heated public spat the two had earlier in their careers. Among the highlights were Tweedy’s comments following the band wrapping Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, saying, “I’m happy to let other people make that kind of Wilco record now, and there’s plenty of them doing it, like Ryan Adams.”

Adams fired back a couple of times as well, performing an improv song at his 2003 Riviera Theatre show entitled “Chicago, Land of Wilco” in which he took aim at the band’s I Am Trying to Break Your Heart documentary, retitling it “I Am Trying to Bore You to Death.” That show is also significant in Adams’ career as it spawned this angry voicemail to Jim DeRogatis after he published a less-than-flattering review of the show. Adams also mentioned in the voicemail that Tweedy could “burn holes through his shoes just by staring at them.” Listen below.

Regardless, as it appears Adams is on the path to covering every artist known to man, a Watch the Throne Part II with Adams and Tweedy would definitely be must-see TV.
