Five For Friday: Music’s Power Couples

Rob Slater on February 14, 2014

Valentine’s Day elicits a couple of reactions from people, and we’ve all been on both sides of the coin for this divisive “holiday.” There are those who dread turning the calendar to February 14 and instead will decide to engulf themselves in season two of House of Cards, and those of us who go all-out, planning the perfect romantic evening. And if you’ve really found the right one, the perfect romantic evening would include diving into House of Cards. I digress. Much like us regular people, musicians too get struck by cupid every now and then, and when that affection is directed at a fellow musician, the results (like any relationship) can go one of two ways. For these five couples, things turned out pretty well. Some are in the same band together, some have created successful careers as solo artists, but all are making it as successful couples. Let’s take a look at some other musician power couples following in the illustrious footsteps of Jay and Beyonce.

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi

She’s got the sweet, sweet voice and he can destroy a guitar solo with his eyes closed. This husband and wife duo aren’t just musicians themselves, they’re fronting a band bearing their names. Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks are on the national radar now, playing sold out shows all over the world and even enjoying Super Bowl 48 from Seattle Seahawks’ owner Paul Allen’s suite. You did good, Derek. You did real good.

Win Butler and Régine Chassagne

A Houston boy married a Quebec girl, they started a band and haven’t put out a bad record yet. Hell, they haven’t even put out a good record. Arcade Fire continues their hot streak of greatness with Reflektor and a huge world tour behind the brilliance of these two. Win and Regine, particularly vocally, give Arcade Fire an edge that most other bands cannot replicate. For those who don’t know, Arcade Fire is truly a family band, as Win’s brother Will is also a member of the band. Look at them, even stealing kisses on stage. Life is good for the hottest rock band in the world at the moment.

Matt and Kim

The Brooklyn indie duo came together during their time at Pratt Institute and have since made a name for themselves with their free-willing approach to songwriting and performing. While their band name might not be creative, everything else about this couple is. And they also seem like fun people to hang out with, judging from their hilarious “Harlem Shake” video.

Elvis Costello and Diana Krall

These two fantastic artists have collaborated a few times, but mostly make a name for themselves as solo musicians. Married in 2003, Krall and Elvis Costello are two of music’s purest and heartfelt singer/songwriters, so the pairing just seems right.

Grace Potter and Matt Burr

Music’s best kept secret! Rumors about these two swirled for years, and they finally put everyone at ease with the announcement that they married in May 2013. If you’re looking for competition for Jay and Beyonce, these two might be it. Burr might not be a sports agent or own a personal brand of cognac, but Jay can’t keep up with him on the drums. As for Grace and Beyonce, we’re all winners in that one.
