Yard Dogs Road Show is an experience. Reminiscent of the
Wild West and its vaudeville showcases of sword swallowers, feisty fire dancers
and dancing dolls, this self-described “hobo cabaret” is filled with creativity
and color yet still feels cohesi ve.
The Yard Dogs sense of all that is carnival reverberated
throughout this Saturday night in the heart of San Francisco. Eddie Joe Cotton entered to a
burst of flames, which proved a fitting accompaniment to a house packed with
post-Burning Man onlookers. A swarm of black-and-blue-garbed burlesque girls
followed, encircling the stage and glaring at the nearby hobo reciting poetry.
Tobias the Mystery Man, Sidecar Tommy and company soon joined for a collective
performance of theater, sideshow and circus.
Not that it’s all shock and awe. The seamless backing band
performed the sounds of old America,
a time before the advent of synthesizers, turntables and the like. Zoe Jakes
mesmerized the audience as her delectable voice teamed with accordions,
trombones and washboards. Scanning through the crowd of burners, hipsters and
hippies, there seemed to be one common thread: The Fillmore was filled with
fun-seekers, looking to be a part of the collaborative carnival that is the
Yard Dogs Road Show.
