Victor Wooten was welcomed home by a near capacity crowd at the State Theater in Falls Church, Virginia on Friday, March 28. The Hampton Roads area native allowed the incoming crowd to warm up under the cover of smooth jazz at the venue’s surplus of bars, though in about two beers time he bagged the leisure and turned up the funk.

Chemistry was the word of the night as the band ripped through a high energy set outfitted with a few sluggish numbers featuring Saundra Williams (a.k.a "The Voice") giving everyone a soulful break.  Although Wooten has earned four Grammy Awards, he shared the stage as if he wasn't the billboard draw. Supported by a group of gifted and enthusiastic musicians, The Victor Wooten Band ran the show more like The Victor Wooten Circus.

"Me and My Bass Guitar," Wooten's solo staple, never made it into the mix but the group ran through most of their new album "Palmystery".   The new material gave everyone a moment to shine throughout the night.  Drummer Derico Watson had a ridiculous run on the skins during "2 Timers" and the frequent double bass solo's nearly knocked the roof off of the Theater.  Victor and guitar playing brother/teacher, Regi Wooten traded licks and pushed the crowd into fifth gear during "The Lesson" and somehow the rest of the tracks found their place in a reasonably seamless performance.

The end of the show brought the band to the audience, tossing drum sticks and throwing high fives, crowd interaction you rarely find among talents so highly esteemed and widely recognized.

Wooten's mystical 31 date tour in support of "Palmystery" continues across the US and finishes up in Ft. Collins Colorado on May 9th.  Catch one of these shows and perhaps you'll high five Victor and see the highly rumored LED light bass materialize on stage.
