Despite forecasts that predicted otherwise, the rain held off for a beautiful summer’s evening in Central Park, hosted by Thievery Corporation with special guests Bebel Gilberto & Federico Aubele, along with Turntables on the Hudson. Thievery's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton came out with a bang, or rather a siren’s wail, and kicked off their hour-long set with “Illumination,” featuring the impressive stylings of a live sitar (among other instruments), and the visual stimulation of a traditional belly dancer.
Aside from some minor sound problems, the energy remained high and they showcased a variety of special guests. Karina Zeviani and Brazilian samba rejuvenator Seu Jorge each accompanied Thievery on their own, and also came together for “Exilio,” usually sung in Spanish but translated to Portuguese this time for a crowd-lifting sing-along.
On their own, Thievery Corporation took it “back to the old school” with the 1997 hit “38.45,” before bringing it back to the new sound with the David Byrne collaboration “The Heart’s a Lonely Hunter.”
Deciding to end it on a high note, the volume was turned up for an energetic “Warning Shots.” When the lights were turned on for the Summerstage’s 10PM curfew, the audience was left only wanting more.
