Bobby
Lee Rodgers and The CodeTalkers brought the heat to the State Theater
on Wednesday night. Opening for Hot Buttered Rum, the trio dropped jaws
as they ripped through their barn burning catalogue of southern kissed
jazz rock.
Donned
in classic suit & tie combo's, The CodeTalkers are quickly
escaping the shadows of Col. Bruce Hampton's as they emerge on the scene with a distinctive look and and an addictive sound. Since
the Colonel stepped away, guitarist Bobby Lee Rogers has alchemized
his own original numbers into an explosion of country licks, and funk rock
progression with just enough room for sophisticated improvisation.
Rogers' sound, along with the enlightened cadence of bassist Andrew
Altman and drummer Mark Raudabaugh, makes the CodeTalkers the best
thing you probably haven't heard (yet).
After tearing through their "Just A Day" opener – heads were turned. By
the time they moved into the effectively catchy "Tumblin Down" the
sonic tripod had moved a sluggish crowd from their bar nests to the
dance floor in front of the stage. After closing with
their seventh and final song "Sword Crosser" the band left a trail of
smoke behind them – leaving crowd wondering "Who were those guys?!"
Currently gearing up for the Shibuya Music Exchange in Tokyo, Japan on May 12-13th
Bobby Lee and the CodeTalkers will return to the states and continue up
and down the East Coast through August in support of their new album, Now.
