Young and old merged on a clear July night for one of New York City’s renowned booze cruises, Rockin’ the River, and some good ole alternative folk-rock expelled by none other than Donna the Buffalo.
This buoyant venue isn’t like its sister cruise, Rocks Off! Rockin’ the
River may be small in comparison, but the openness is ideal. With only
a plastic ribbed roof for protection, the cool Hudson River breeze
whipped between dancers, keeping the temperature at a tolerable level.
Around sunset, the boat was rocked by out-of-city folks rushing
starboard to snap a picture of the up-close and back-lit Lady Liberty.
Veteran Deadheads in tie-dye danced alongside the twenty-somethings in
heels as the “herd” played an assortment of their work and some of
their latest songs from Silverlined, released just a month ago.
To spice it up, the band threw in some of their freshest tunes, including
“Tomorrow Still Knows” and “Locket and Key.” The group toned it down a
notch while approaching the dock with “Temporary Misery,” a much-needed
reliever as through the entire night the band had played bouncy,
dance-your-pants off songs, and the audience was getting a wee bit soggy.
In addition, Donna the Buffalo tossed in some oldies but goodies like
“Positive Friction” and lead singer, instrument master Tara Nevins,
welcomed her niece on tage to lead the band in “The Pressure Is On.”
Half the fun in attending a live performance like this is to watch
Nevins move from her accordion to vocals and occasionally a washboard
throughout the show.
Despite the difference in the audience’s appearance, the energy
lifting from the crowd had no age attached to it. Age simply isn’t an issue
for the timeless Donna the Buffalo.
