Fox Theatre

November 8, 2006
The Brazilian Girls do not allow themselves to be pigeonholed. Alternating between shades of funk, electronic, world and dub, they can sound simultaneously vaguely familiar and yet completely original.
Fox Theatre was divided into two sections for the all-ages show. Almost the entire crowd was squeezed into the bar side; the under-age side was a bit sparse and had some decent dancing space. This immediately proved to be a crucial, as the show started off with the electronic, high-energy “Lazy Lover,” which set the tone for a sweaty two-hour set. Jesse Murphy (bass), Didi Gutman (keyboard) and Aaron Johnston (drums) came out first, laying down the instrumentals for the track; lead singer Sabina Sciubba slinked onstage a moment later and began to dance as she sang. She wore a silver, sequined, full-body leotard and lace veil, giving her a sexy, mysterious, quasi-futuristic look that could best be described as a cross between Vanna White and Robocop.
As she came onstage, the crowd began buzzing and everyone, male or female, was saying the same thing; “She’s amazing,” “I wonder what she looks like,” “That dancing!” The chatter quickly faded as people started to feel the music, and the band continued into “Dance Till the Morning Sun” with the same energy they had started with and Sciubba rocking a kazoo.
For her next trick, Sciubba demonstrated some of her linguistic abilities with the Spanish “Me Gustas Cuando Callas” and “La Territoire,” in French. This last song marked one of the most memorable moments of the performance, in which any audience member who wished to “get naked” was invited to come up onstage. Jesse Murphy got the ball rolling by stripping down to his underwear before returning to his bass. He was joined onstage by another gentleman who danced alone in his underwear before being gradually joined by more audience members. At its peak, the underwear dance-fest included about 20 or 30 people onstage, though no one was technically “naked.”
The set wound down rather uneventfully with the title track of the band’s latest album, Talk to La Bomb, and “All About Us” from their debut release, picking back up for one final effort, the ever-popular “Pussy.” The encore, “Sexy Asshole” and “Problem,” was icing on the cake, but didn’t really have the same energy as the set-closers. In the end “Pussy” left more of a lasting impact musically, although the lasting memory from the show was the stage presence of the mysterious Sciubba and the interactive performance of the semi-naked dancers.
