Peter Frampton
Fingerprints
Universal
I just sold my old vinyl copy of Frampton Comes Alive. It was time to move on, and from the sound of Fingerprints, Frampton’s first all-instrumental album, he feels the same way. But Fingerprints is not completely a departure from his arena rock ways, despite the early sprinkling of slightly new-agey jazz numbers. Frampton cuts the rug with a number of guests like The Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, guitarists Hank Marvin of The Shadows and Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes and, most interestingly, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Matt Cameron (also ex-Soundgarden) for two songs including Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” which begins with a jazzy wah-wah riff and ends an all-out rocker.
Guests or not, Frampton proves he’s still got the chops, whether drifting through jazz riffs, blues shuffles or hanging on a few Joe Satriani-like atmospherics, it’s all here, and it’s a pretty fun listen. H Glenn BurnSilver
