Old Crow Medicine Show
Big Iron World
Nettwerk

Stepping into the wayback machine and setting the dials for some curiously fresh tastes of the past, Old Crow Medicine Show does a darned good job of blending some extremely old-timey sounds with a contemporary attitude that comes off only slightly hokey at times. Big Iron World is a fast-paced rumination on past and future; helmed by the triple-threat vocal team of Willie Watson, Ketch Secor and Critter Fuqua (even their names are O Brother authentic), Old Crow's newest collection of oldies and old-sounding originals is fast-paced, curious and cool, all at the same time. From foot-stomping versions of Woody Guthrie worker songs ("Union Girl") to an amusing take on the old tune "Cocaine Habit" (which manages to name check both Karl Rove and Elijah Wood, no less), Big Iron World furthers the young band's elegant explorations of past and present. Secor's omnipresent harmonica can get a bit tiring, but the group's overall high spirits keep things moving. Andy Stonehouse
