Golem
Fresh Off Boat
JDub

If the thought of another group from the people who brought you Matisyahu makes you go, “Oy gavult,” then Golem’s Fresh Off Boat most likely isn’t for you. But, if not, Golem’s punk brand of klezmer may pack a big enough punch to popularize the group’s kosher offerings even in secular circles. After busking around Brooklyn’s bar mitzvah/wedding for circuit several years, Golem—named after a mythical figure in Yiddish folk lore—has perfected its mix of folk, jazz and traditional Jewish sounds. Throughout, an inner circle of circumcised royalty—including Mike Gordon, Jeremy Parzen and Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, as well as the Dresden Dolls’ Amanda Palmer—stop by, helping make songs like “Mazel” and “Golem Hora” sound relevant in an age of YouTube and TiVo. L’chayim! Mike Greenhaus
