Donovan Frankenreiter
Move by Yourself
Lost Highway
“I remember those times they said I wouldn’t make it/ I couldn’t just do what they wanted, and fake it,” sings Donovan Frankenreiter to open his latest album, Move By Yourself. It’s quite apropos for Frankenreiter who’s perhaps the original pro surfer come musician. His first band, Sunchild, formed a decade ago and never found wide credibility. Striking out solo a few years ago with help from compatriot Jack Johnson, he found some well-earned success but it left him battling warranted comparisons to Johnson.
Now, with a jump over to Lost Highway alongside artists like Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello, Frankenreiter has finally, and fully, come into his own as a bandleader. Still an old soul whose lyricism and sense of groove are ‘70s certified, his latest sees less acoustic, beachy fare and instead more raucous, sing-along vamps fueled by electric guitars and funky keys (“Move By Yourself,” “Fool,” “That’s Too Bad”). He can still do quiet and tender-”By Your Side,” “Beautiful Day,” “Everytime”-the only difference now is they don’t get lost in a shuffle of similarity. Josh Baron
