Tom Marshall was Phish’s lyricist and Trey Anastasio’s BFF since 8th grade. His brain children include “Bouncing Round the Room,” “Heavy Things,” “The Connection,” “Chaulk Dust Torture,” “Stash” and “Wilson.

“Towards the end [of Phish], Trey and I wrote a lot together,” Marshall says, adding that he’s really into creating melodies.

Marshall is now working on the fourth version of his own band, Amfibian. Though the band has had many personnel changes over the years, its most recent record, Skip the Goodbyes, was released last year on Relix Records.

Here, a few of Tom Marshall's musical preferences:

On his iPod:

Gillian Welch; Steve Earle; Jimi Hendrix; Phish ("obviously"); The White Stripes “and some funny stuff because my son is learning to play guitar;  this stuff wouldn’t ordinarily be on here…”        Van Halen; Kimya Dawson (“She plays music from that movie… [snaps] Juno! It’s funny because she can’t sing and she can’t play but she’s great! That’s a good representation of what I’m listening to these days.”

Latest Live Performance:
Dave Matthews Band in Camden, New Jersey.  “It was alright, it was OK. You know what my favorite was a year ago and is coming again--Steely Dan on Tuesday at The Beacon. They were my favorite growing up, like pre Aja. The earlier stuff is incredible. Skunk Baxter is an influence of Trey's, who introduced me to them. They’re the quintessential studio band.”

Favorite Young Band:
Midlake
