In preparation for the fifth annual Langerado music festival (March 9-11) we asked a few Relix staffers heading south to pick their schedule “playlists.” Here is what they had to say:
Cole Boyle
Friday:
Tea Leaf Green (2-3 PM): I’ll start my musical journey off with some soulful Cali tunes. Fairy wings encouraged, but not required.
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (3:15-4:15 PM): A new favorite, pumped for the set. The voice is a total throwback...and I like it!
The Hold Steady (5-6 PM): Always down to see some new indie rock at my favorite jamband festival that I am not cool enough to have listened to all that much before. Don’t worry, I will save my twirling for the next thing I go see.
Trey>STS9>Trey>STS9 (8-10 PM): After a break and a listen to Malkmus from the booth, I will be pumped to bop back and forth between the two headliners. TreyTribe is gonna be fun! I love ADD concert going!
Saturday:
Jake Shimabukuro (12-12:45 PM): Ukelele before breakfast! What a beautiful way to start the day!
Apollo Sunshine>The Slip (12:30-2:30 PM): Oh man, good stuff here. Perhaps my favorite block of music of the weekend... bopping friendly tunes for two hours in a row. AND, If you are reading this and haven’t already, check out The Slip’s Eisenhower!
Perpetual Groove (4:30-5:30 PM): Good solid jamband. I like jambands. And this is one not to miss.
My Morning Jacket>the Disco Biscuits>My Morning Jackets>the Disco Biscuits (8-10PM): I can’t make up my mind which I want to see! Decisions, decisions!
Sunday:
Band of Horses (1:45-2:45 PM): Blogolicious. Gotta see if they are as good as Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan et al claim them to be.
Cat Power (5:15-6:15 PM): Amazing. Cannot wait. Listened to The Greatest on repeat for 3 days. Not sick of it, can’t wait to see her live.
Explosions in the Sky (7-8PM): Like little Jesse Spano on Saved by the Bell, I am “So excited, so excited...so ready to see them.”
Widespread Panic (7:30-10:00PM): I grew up in South Carolina where along with cotton, Panic is KING. Time to get the action burgers on the grill.
Jenny Roth
Thursday
Sound Tribe Sector 9 (late night): I couldn’t ask for a better way to start off my weekend!!!
Friday
Lotus (1:30-2:30pm): Some people like to see them as a late-night show, but I think they’re the perfect band to see in the early hours of the day. They’re pretty. They get me moving and feeling good.
Galactic (4:30-5:30pm): Everyone needs to get a little funky from time to time.
The Hold Steady (5:30 - 6:00pm): I’ve heard good things...it’s time for me to get a listen!
moe. (6:30- 8:00pm): I like acting like a moe.ron sometimes.
Sound Tribe Sector 9 (8:30-10:00pm): Time to recharge my heady crystals... No but really, I love this band. I can’t wait to get my dance on with Tribe! The fan base is a wonderful group and the atmosphere always positive. The music... to end the day, like I begin the day, is pretty, it gets me moving and it makes me feel damn good.
The Disco Biscuits (late night): Dirty. It’s going to be dirty. I came to get down.
Saturday
Toubab Krewe (1:15-2:00pm): Another great way to start my day!
Such a feel-good band. This group of music-makers are going somewhere.
Love them!
The Slip (2:00-2:30pm): It’s a bummer this band is playing the same time as Toubab because I’m going to have to miss a bit of both. I’d rather not miss any of either!
Medeski Martin and Wood (5:45-7:00pm): Jazzy me up!
The Disco Biscuits (8:00-10:00pm): We love you like a brother.
Michael Franti and Spearhead (late night): I’m feelin’ good! “How ya’ll feelin?!?”
Sunday
Toots & the Maytals (3:30-4:30pm): Add a bit of reggae to the roster, and my music experience for this weekend can be considered complete!
Explosions in the Sky (7:00-8:00pm): A beautifully melodic mixture of sound. I want to hear their noise!
Widespread Panic (7:30p- 10:00pm): It’s an excuse to get drunk and rowdy!
Perpetual Groove (late night): A great way to end the festivities. This’ll be a real fun show to get down with the family.
Mike Greenhaus
Assembly of Dust (1-2 PM): Since first catching Strangefolk seven years ago I’ve seen Reid Genauer play on a Colorado mountain, in a Kansas field, and in a New York City club. I guess it is high time I add a Florida lake to that list!
Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings (3:15 - 4:15 PM): Sharon Jones has done for retro-soul what Antibalas did for Afrobeat. So it makes sense that Gabe Roth co-founded both bands.
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks (6:45 - 7:45 PM): Stephen Malkmus’ “Freeze the Saints” has been stuck in my head all week, but I’m still not sure if it is a happy or sad song. I guess that’s what makes it so perfect
moe. (6:30 - 8:00PM): Rolling Stone called them “guitar gods,” but I think the more appropriate title is “festival kings.”
Trey Anastasio (8:00 - 10:00PM) and Sound Tribe Sector 9 (8:30 - 10:00): A tough choice for sure. Do I want to spin or bounce, remember the past or hear the future, try crystals or—I guess I’ll stop while I am ahead.
The Disco Biscuits (late night): I think March will be the month where the Disco Biscuits surpass Phish as the band I’ve been the most. A turning point indeed.
Saturday:
Apollo Sunshine (12:30 - 1:30 PM) and The Slip (1:30 - 2:30 PM): The perfect post-jam package. Artsy-rock with an improve edge and artsy improv with a rock edge. Ah, symmetry.
Toubab Krewe (1:15 - 2:15 PM): Dude, I’m so post post-jam. It’s time for jamband revivalists and the Toubab Krewe is clearly leading the charge.
JJ Grey & Mofro (5:00 - 6:00 PM): MOFRO, I mean JJ Grey and Mofro, have a great new album with some great new buzz. I am excited to see them in their hometown setting.
Medeski Martin & Wood (5:45 - 7:00 PM): MMW are always a bit funkier in festival settings—just the way I like them.
My Morning Jacket (8:00 - 10PM) and The Disco Biscuits (8:00 - 10PM )
For the fourth time in the past 12 months my two favorite currently active live touring bands are going head-to-head (also see Bonnaroo and twice at High Sierra). I plan to catch the first bit of MMJ (where they will hopefully breakout “Golden” and “Lowdown”) and the second half of tDB (where I will hopefully hear “the Great Abyss” and “I-Man”). My head will likely explode at both performances
Sunday
Taj Mahal (2:45 - 3:45 PM): I haven’t seen him for years and he is ready for a comeback!
Los Lobos (4:30 - 5:30 PM): I hear Los Lobos’ acoustic tour is their best in years. They are also playing our Cold Turkey podcast, which will make my Dad happy.
Explosions in the Sky (7:00 - 8:00PM): My new favorite band kind of sounds like the love child of Sigur Ros and the Duo.
The New Pornographers (9:00 - 10:00 PM): Every great jam festival also needs a healthy does of indie rock. I think the New Pornographers will be this year’s big cross-over.
Perpetual Groove (late night): Perpetual Groove stole the show on Jam Cruise and the quartet will likely continue to make waves on land.
