Colin Lake and Wellbottom were recent winners of the Relix Jamoff! competition and their original song, "Red Cross," was featured on the compilation disc included in the April/May issue. Since then, the progressive blues band has released itslatest album, Bullet, and now headman Colin Lake (lap slide guitar) shares some of his favorite music with us.
Colin, who or what are you listening to right now?
I was just in New Orleans where I heard as many brass bands as possible--anything with a second line beat! I've also been listening to a lot of Bill Frisell and one of my favorite albums of all time, New Train, by Paul Pena. The album is brimming with soul and has a very interesting back story.
If I scrolled through your iPod, who or what bands would I find?
Wood Brothers; Ian Mouser; Greg Brown; Paul Pena; Chris Whitley; Kelly Joe Phelps; Bill Frisell
MMW; Allman Bros; Dave Chappelle's "Killing Them Softly"; Brother Ali; Too Short; JJ Cale; Mississippi John Hurt; Son House; Albert King; Bill Withers; Rebirth Brass Band; Muddy Waters; Toots and the Maytals; Taj Mahal and many, many more
Give us a fun musical fact about yourself.
I didn't take up the guitar or singing until well after high school; I am self-taught.
Who/when/where were the last live performance you went to?
Derek Trucks Band closing out Jazzfest in New Orleans in early May, 2008.
Susan Tedeschi joined the band and took it home with "The Weight"--an incredible encore. I also saw Lettuce play two nights
in a row down there... the funk was raw!
Who will we never find on your iPod?
Tesh
What bands are you glad you're around for?
Derek Trucks Band; Chris Whitley (1960-2005)
What band do you wish you had seen live?
The Band
Let's hear about a formative experience.
For the past few years I have been undergoing a rapid musical
maturation. I have been lucky enough to play with a band that is chock full of experience and talent. Learning to play in a band
with such good players has enabled me to become a confident performer and bandleader.
