Sixty nine year-old Paul
Mawhinney, widely credited with having the world’s largest record
collection, has sold his entire collection on eBay. Mawhinney bought a Frankie Lane record 60 years ago and has
amassed over three million records and 300,000 CDs, containing more than six
million song titles, over the years. The former military serviceman’s
collection includes everything from Thomas Edison to American Idol and about half
of the recordings are new and never played. The estimated value of this amazing
collection is more than $50 million. Gems include an unreleased and untitled
Rolling Stones album of early singles valued somewhere between $5,000 and
$10,000, 15 copies of Elvis Presley's 1957 Christmas Album and a copy of
Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift for You.
But, recently, age and health concerns have forced Mawhinney to auction his collection
whole. The starting bid on eBay was $3 million, yet Mawhinney only sold his collection
for $3,002,150.00. Ideally, Mawhinney hopes the buyer purchased the collection
with the intentions on donating it to a library or museum. For more information please click here .
