Neil Young will revisit a series of lost recordings on his next studio album
Chrome Dreams II. In 1977, Young put
the finishing touches on an album that was set to be released as Chrome Dreams. The disc even had cover
art, which was created by Young’s longtime producer David Briggs. The project
was then put on hold and, less than a year later, a fire at Young’s Malibu home destroyed all
documentation that Chrome Dreams existed.
For many years, there was some debate as to whether Chrome Dreams was actually the title Young gave the unreleased
project, though several songs from the album have since surfaced. Marquee
tracks like "Powderfinger" and "Sedan Delivery" were
reworked for later projects, while "Too Far Gone" was shelved until 1989's
Freedom. Young also played "Stringman,"
a track that was likely featured on Chrome
Dreams, during his 1992 appearance on MTV Unplugged. For Chrome Dreams II, Young revisited three
songs from his mid-1970s recording sessions and wrote 7 new numbers. In total,
the disc runs over 60 minutes and includes two extended jams which clock in at
18:30 and 13:00. In addition to Young, Chrome
Dreams features Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina and pedal steel guitarist
Ben Keith. Young released his latest
album, Living with War, just last
year.
