Trey Anastasio pleaded not guilty today in a Washington County Court to three felony
charges of illegally possessing prescription painkillers and driving while
impaired, and misdemeanor counts of possessing heroin and an anti-anxiety
medication that had been prescribed to someone else. He was released on bail and is scheduled to
appear in court again March 27. The guitarist will perform two shows in Florida during that period: a March 8 gig at Ft. Lauderdale's
Revolution and a March 9 headlining spot at the Langerado Music and Arts festival.
According to the Burlington Free press, Anastasio agreed to a pre-plea investigation
that will help the court get to know him better "and help you resolve your
case." Anastasio's lawyer, Steve Coffey, acknowledged that his client
"has a problem, he knows it and is working with it." While the guitarist faces up to 14 years in prison,
he will likely enter a court-ordered rehab program. Anastasio attended the
hearing with his wife, Susan. Anastasio did not comment to the media during the
proceedings.
