The Smashing Pumpkins will celebrate its 20th anniversary
later this year with two very different tours. According to the band, the tour’s
August leg will focus on smaller-sized venues and “consist of unique sets
and songs.” The group will then hit arenas in major markets such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago as part of a
larger 20th Anniversary tour in November. These shows are expected
to focus on “the band's history, legacy, and accomplishments over their career.”
The Smashing Pumpkins is expected to spend early 2009 touring behind a forthcoming box
set celebrating the band’s first album, Gish.
"The August tour is going to be a blast,” Billy Corgan said
in a statement. “Expect a very loud and raucous show from us... and we are very,
very happy to know we will finally be playing our own shows come November in New York, L.A., and Chicago... The 20th
Anniversary shows will be magical... We are already working on lots of
surprises."
As of press time, the group’s only confirmed date is an August
9 stop at Hammond, IN’s The Venue at Horseshoe Casino. Oddly
enough, the intimate gig is the closest the group has come to its Chicago hometown since
reforming.
