The Flaming Lips have shared the stage with a striking mix
of entertainers over the years, ranging from Beck to the String Cheese
Incident. But, for their next project, the quirky trio has unlisted an even
more unlikely collaborator. Wayne Coyne, the Flaming Lips’ chief
singer/songwriter, is currently working with West Wing/Studio 60 creator Aaron Sorkin on a Broadway play based around the
group’s 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The group will likely pen a
series of connecting songs with Sorkin, which will turn the group’s “loose,
concept album,” into a cohesive story. Tony Award-winning director/producer Des
McAnuff, whose credits include rock-centric musicals such as The Who's Tommy
and Good Vibrations as well as traditional Broadway fair like Guys and Dolls,
will handle production duties. The Flaming Lips will open its spring tour at Athens, GA’s
Classic Center Theater on April 11.
