The Hold Steady will headline the first free show of the summer at Brooklyn’s McCarren Park
pool this Sunday. Other bands on the bill include The Loved Ones, J
Roddy & The Business and DJ Todd O-Phonic Todd. Organized by local
promoters JELLYNYC, the weekly Pool Parties will present a diverse mix
of headliners over the course of the summer, including Ronnie Spector
(7/6), The Breeders and Matt & Kim (7/13), Liars (7/20), MGMT
(7/27), Black Lips and Deerhunter (8/3) and Aesop Rock (8/17). JELLNYC
is expected to confirm headliners for additional free Pool Parties on
August 10 and 24 in the coming week.
Of particular note is MGMT’s upcoming
performance MGMT’s upcoming performance, which may feature
more jamming than one might expect. "We discussed playing a 45-minute
version of ‘China Cat Sunflower,’ today, but didn’t have enough time to
practice,” MGMT guitarist James Richardson told the Relix/Jambands.com
staff at Bonnaroo. “We all pretty much secretly love jambands in MGMT
-- well, not so secretly. Around 2000 or something, everybody really
wanted to be 'indie' and now it's just swinging back, I guess. I don't
know if that's true, but I hope it is. I want to break down those
barriers.”
Since McCarren Park will undergo an extensive renovation in the coming
months, many people expect this summer to be the final call for
JELLYNYC’s Pool Parties.
