On Saturday Stevie Wonder hosted his first New
York headlining appearance since 1996 at New
York’s famed Madison
Square Garden.
After stepping out of the spotlight for a number of years, the legendary keyboardist
returned to active duty earlier this year following the death of his mother in
2006.
The keyboardist took the stage flanked by his daughter Aisha,
who sings in his band, and preceded to open the night with a tribute to the
victims of 9/11. As a nod to his mother, a few songs into his set Wonder also brought
out Tony Bennett, one of her favorite singers, for a surprise cover of "For
Once in My Life," the track the pair recorded for the latter performer’s Grammy
winning 2006 Duets: An American Classic.
The song also included a tease of Bennett’s famous “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
But, for many, the evening’s highlight was an appearance by Prince,
who first collaborated with Wonder on his 2005 album A Time 2 Love. The Purple One took the stage unannounced and played
guitar with Wonder’s band on a rocking version of his signature "Superstition."
Wonder also treated the near sold out crowd to sing-a-longs like "Golden
Lady," "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," “Signed, Sealed,
Delivered," "Boogie On, Reggae Woman," "Sir Duke,"
"I Wish," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and
"As."
Stevie Wonder’s comeback tour will resume at Charlotte, NC’s
Charlotte Bobcats Arena on November 28.
