Steel Train will debut its new lineup at Hoboken, NJ's Maxwell's tonight. The New York-by-way-of-New Jersey group will return to its former Garden State stomping grounds to preview its new insjack_sttrumentation before beginning work on its next studio album. As previously reported, Steel Train drummer Matthias Gruber returned home to Germany, while guitarist Matt Goldman recently stepped away from the music scene and relocated to Boston. Steel Train, however, will rally on and recently added three new members. In addition to founding guitarist Jack Antonoff, keyboardist Scott Irby-Ranniar, and longtime bassist Evan Winiker, Steel Train's new lineup will feature drummer John Shiffman, guitarist/vibraphone player Daniel Silbert, and multi-instrumentalist Angel Deradoorian. Shiffman has subbed for Gruber in the past and even performed with the group at Bonnaroo in 2005. Silbert's roots with Steel Train are even deeper, having performed with Antonoff and Winiker in their pre-Steel Train days and served as the group's tour manager for the past four years. In the past few months, Silbert has also joined the group onstage with increased regularity. After New Year's Eve Steel Train will begin work on its next studio album in Los Angeles, before performing a handful of shows at SXSW. The group will support Grace Potter tomorrow in Burlington, VT and Assembly of Dust in Boston on Saturday.
