Musical/comedy troupe Spinal Tap will reunite
this summer for Al Gore’s international Live Earth event. The mock-metal band
rose to fame thanks to Rob Reiner’s 1984 film This is Spinal Tap. The
group, which features comedy actors Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and
Harry Shearer, has both toured and recorded as Spinal Tap, and helped
popularize the mockumentary film genre. The group released its latest album, Break
Like The Wind, in 1992.
Spinal Tap’s classic lineup is expected to perform at London’s Wembley Stadium as part of Live
Earth. Reiner, who played a documentarian in the original Spinal Tap film, will
also be on hand. Before their performance the group will release a new single “Warmer
Than Hell” and star in a 15-minute Reiner film on April 25 as part of New York’s Tribeca Film
Festival. The film spoofs the concept of the rock-and-roll reunion, with the
various members of the fake band pursuing such varied careers as hip-hop
production and horse racing. One character is even rumored to be in rehab for
his internet addiction. As previously reported, Live Earth will help raise
awareness about Global Warming by hosting concerts in seven different
continents on July 7.
