In an odd turn of events, the tenth Coachella Music & Arts Festival,
which was once known as the country's defining indie-rock event, has
widened its scope to include a number of classic-rock, organic-pop and
psychedelic rock bands this spring. The move comes a few years after
Bonnaroo, the country’s other touchstone music festival, broadened its
horizons to include indie rock, rap, metal and pop.
In addition to the first U.S. performance in more than a decade by
seminal alt-rock outfit Portishead, Coachella will feature headlining
performance by singer/songwriter Jack Johnson and Pink Floyd visionary
Roger Waters, who is expected to offer a live version of Dark Side of the Moon.
Coachella will also feature performances by decidedly Bonnaroo acts
like Brett Dennen, John Butler Trio and Sharon Jones & the Dap
Kings, along with My Morning Jacket, perhaps the only band to hold dual
citizenship on both sides of the Coachella/Bonnaroo divide. As in years
past, Coachella will feature some high-profile reunions, including the
first U.S. appearance by The Verve since 1999 and the first confirmed
appearance by the Raconteurs since Jack White began focusing on the
White Stripes last year.
The festival will feature appearances by The Breeders, Fatboy Slim,
Tegan and Sara, Madness, The Swell Season, The National, Animal
