Last night, Phil Lesh & Friends offered
a surprise, public dress rehearsal for their upcoming tour in front of
150 fans at Larkspur, CA’s Sweetwater Station. The low-profile gig
found Lesh backed by bandmates Larry Campbell, Jackie Greene and Steve
Molitz, as well as occasional collaborator Barry Sless. Throughout the
night, Lesh’s agent Jonathan Levine subbed for drummer John Molo, who
was unable to attend the rehearsal. Like most of Lesh’s recent
setlists, the show offered a mix of material traditionally sung by
Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, including “Alabama Getaway,” “West L.A.
Fadeaway,” “The Music Never Stopped” and “Cassidy.” Lesh also revived
his cover of Ryan Adams’ “Let it Ride” and offered some tracks from
Greene’s catalogue, including “Mexican Girl.” According to reports, the
band appeared loose and relaxed, fine-tuning its songs throughout the
night.
Phil Lesh & Friends are expected to perform
at the Sweetwater Station tonight through Thursday. The group will then
kick off a tour at Columbia, MD’s Merriweather Post Pavilion on
September 30.
