Over the weekend Neil Young hosted a diverse mix of
musicians at his 20th annual Bridge School Benefit. As in years past, the multi-band benefit took
place at Mountain View, CA’s Shoreline Amphitheater and supported
the school for disabled students that Young founded with his wife Pegi. In
addition to Young, this year’s lineup featured Pearl Jam, Death Cab for Cutie,
Brian Wilson, Dave Mathews Band, Foo Fighters, Gillian Welch and Trent Reznor,
who offered his first acoustic set. As expected, Young performed with a number
of bands throughout the weekend, in addition to fronting his Prairie Wind Band and
singing duets with his wife Pegi. On Saturday, Young ran through his
"Country Girl (Medley)" (off Crazy Horses’ Everybody Knows
This Is Nowhere with Welch, jammed with Dave Matthews Band on an
acoustic version of “Cortez the Killer” and offered some organ to Brian Wils on
during "Good Vibrations.” For the first time, Young also performed “Throw
Your Hatred Down,” off his 1995 album Mirror Ball, with all
of Pearl Jam. Though Pearl Jam backed Young on Mirror Ball,
Vedder did not join his bandmates on the road when they toured with Young in
support of the disc. At the end of the night, Vedder, Matthews Dave Grohl, and
a handful of additional musicians joined Young for his anthem "Rockin' in
the Free World.”
Sunday’s selist mirrored Saturday’s show with a few
variations. During Wilson’s
set, Young stayed on a bit longer, adding his organ skills to both “Good
Vibrations” and “Barbara Ann.” Instead of “Cortez the Killer,” Young also used
Dave Matthews Band to reinterpret his “Down by the River.” Finally, Pearl Jam
also swapped its Tom Waits’ “Picture in a Frame” for Bob Dylan’s “Masters of
War “ during their highly anticipated set.
