In the fall of 2006, Patti Smith played the closing show at New York’s seminal CBGB’s, which was located in Manhattan’s downtown Bowery
district. Now, the veteran punk poet, who is profiled in the June issue of
Relix, will help open a new Brooklyn venue.
Smith will headline the first show at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg,
which is located on the former site of indie-rock womb Northsix. Smith will
play a show with her band on September 4, helping reestablish the space as one
of New York’s
premier music rooms. Since closing earlier this year, the space has been given
a significant facelift and is now a three floor room that includes a basement
bar. The venue has been modeled after New York’s
Bowery Ballroom which, like the Music
Hall of Williamsburg,
is booked by influential promoter Bowery Presents. Smith has performed at the
Bowery Ballroom each New Year’s Eve for the past eight years and also recently
celebrated the release of her new cover album, Twelve.
"To have Patti and her band, who have become so much a part of our
lives, open the Music Hall, for me, is the perfect beginning to our life in Brooklyn," said Michael Swier, a partner in The
Bowery Presents. "We've been fortunate to have a lot of support for the
Bowery Ballroom and the Mercury Lounge over the years, and we hope that with
our continued dedication to the music and the fans, the Music Hall will become
a well-loved neighborhood music destination."
The Music Hall of Williamsburg is first Brooklyn music venue to be
managed and operated by The Bowery Presents, which has promoted shows in
Brooklyn since 2006 and at Brooklyn’s Prospect
Park, McCarren Park Pool and Keyspan Park
at Coney Island. The venue will be booked by
promoter Josh Moore, who previously worked at AEG Live's Nokia Theatre Times
Square and is a founding partner of Jam Cruise. Tickets for the opening night
Patti Smith show will go on sale at noon this Saturday.
