2009 looks to be a year filled with releases by Relix’s core
bands. Longtime friends the Disco Biscuits and Umphrey’s McGee are both putting
the finishing touches on studio albums comprised primarily of songs that have never been played live. Likewise, Soulive has been blogging from drummer Alan
Evans' studio about a new studio album that will feature horns. After celebrating its tenth anniversary, Yonder
Mountain String Band may very well try out some new songs on its annual Cabin
Fever Tour and Medeski, Martin & Wood are slated to release the second and
third installments in their Radiolarian Series.
In the indie-rock realm, Wilco is expected to release the
follow-up to 2007’s Sky Blue Sky before
the summer of 2009 and Ryan Adams rushed back into the studio over Thanksgiving
to begin work on a new album tentatively titled Dear Impossible. Ben Harper surprised many by announcing the
release of a studio album with his new band Relentless7 and Dave Matthews
Band will likely finish work on the album it began before the death of
saxophonist LeRoi Moore. We’ve also heard that Grace Potter is setting aside
some studio time this winter or spring.
