As expected, Mike Gordon will hit the road this summer in support of his forthcoming studio album The Green Sparrow. The
former Phish bassist will hit the festival circuit in July, before
launching a club tour at Philadelphia’s The Fillmore at the TLA on
August 3. From there Gordon will make stops at Richmond, VA’s Toad’s
Place (8/5), Raleigh, NC’s Lincoln Theatre (8/6), Charlotte, NC’s
Neighborhood Theatre (8/7), Charleston, SC’s The Music Farm (8/8), New
York’s Highline Ballroom (8/13), Buffalo, NY’s Thursday At The Square
(8/14), Seattle’s The Tractor Tavern (8/22), Portland, OR’s Aladdin
Theatre (8/23), San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival
(8/24), Los Angeles’ Roxy Theatre (8/26), Boulder, CO’s Fox Theatre
(8/29), Bellevue, CO’s Mishawaka Amphitheatre (8/30), Omaha, NE’s
Slowdown (8/31), Minneapolis, MN’s Varsity Theatre (9/2), Madison, WI’s
Majestic (9/3), Chicago’s Park West (9/4), Cleveland, OH’s Beachland
Ballroom (9/5) and Boston’s Paradise Rock Club (9/17). Of particular
note is Gordon’s Chicago performance, which is being billed as Mike
Gordon’s Variety Show.
For this run Gordon’s band will consist of Max Creek guitarist Scott
Murawski, Rubblebucket Orchestra percussionist Craig Myers, keyboardist
Tom Cleary (an instructor at UVM) and drummer Todd Isler, who Gordon
stumbled upon by chance through Chris Thile collaborator Michael Davis.
“Todd didn’t know anyone I knew, even Joe [Russo] and Marco [Benevento]
and those guys know everyone, Gordon tells Relix/Jambands.com. “But I
think jamband fans are going to be in heaven. His playing is funky and
danceable and mesmerizing, but very creative at the same time. He’s
like this secret treasure.”
He continues: “I wanted to go with people I really resonated
with, even if it wasn’t names that people necessarily know. Scott and I
have this chemistry that keeps growing and growing. I feel like I am
copying his band Max Creek by having a percussionist and a drummer and
keep joking that I should call us Mike’s Creek [laughter]. It is just
so fun to connect with him. Scott and I and our girlfriends went to the
volcanoes together recently, so it was a no-brainer to have him. We may
bring out some of the songs from Inside In,
though some of those songs are about the silly characters in my film. I
want to make a band that isn’t just for this one album. Who knows,
people can change in three years maybe one day they will even get a
different bass player, like Scott’s new band with Bill Kreutzmann
[laughter].”
