A diverse mix of musicians will pay tribute to R.E.M. at New York’s Carnegie Hall on March 11. Organized by Knitting Factory founder Michael Dorf, the event will follow the same model as the promoter’s past tributes to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen: each musician or band will cover one R.E.M. song and 100% of the event's net proceeds will benefit musical education programs for underprivileged children. As off press time, confirmed performances include Patti Smith, Vic Chesnutt & Elf Power, Rachel Yamagata, Calexico, Guster, Throwing Muses with Kristen Hersh, Kimya Dawson, Ingrid Michaelson, Glenn Hansard of The Frames & Swell Season, Apples in Stereo, Tommy James and the Shondells, Jolie Holland, Keren Ann, The Db's and Bob Mould.

A variety of ticket packages are available for the benefit, including a special VIP option that includes a private artist reception at Dorf’s new venue, the City Winery. The reception will feature both cuisine designed by Mario Batali and encore performances by a number of the evening’s entertainers. Joan Osborne will officially open the new Manhattan room on New Year’s Eve.
