Confirming numerous rumors, My Morning Jacket will headline New York’s famed Madison Square Garden on New Year’s Eve.
The “evening with performance” is a natural progression for the
Kentucky-bred quintet, who gradually grew from playing the small, Lower
East Side New York haunt Brownies to filling bigger rooms like Mercury
Lounge, North Six, the Bowery Ballroom, Irving Plaza, Webster Hall,
Roseland Ballroom and Radio City Music Hall, where MMJ will perform
next Friday.
“I think we are doing New Year’s again this year and, if we do, it is
going to be a sequel to the continual New Year’s saga that we started
in 2006-2007,” Jim James recently told Relix. “So that
will be part two of our epic Oregon trial saga. [Last time] we died and
ascended to heaven on the stairway to heaven. Part two will start in
heaven and continue onwards.”
MMJ was scheduled to open for the Black Crowes at Madison
Square Garden on December 31, 2005, but was bowed out after James was
diagnosed with pneumonia. For more on the group, please see Grace Potter's interview with the group in the June issue of Relix.
