A number of jam-scene stalwarts will share the stage with UK
R&B superstar Joss Stone at New
York’s Highland Ballroom on November 3. Presented by
HeadCount--an organization co-created by The
Pharmer’s Almanac author Andy Bernstein and Disco Biscuits bassist Marc
Brownstein in 2004--The Get Out and Vote Party will take place the night
before the 2008 general elections.
“The organization
uses music as a platform for people to come together in civic engagement,” Bernstein
says. “But [The Get Out and Vote Party] is not just about getting people
registered to vote. It’s about making people aware.”
In addition to Stone, the party will feature performances by
Robert Randolph, ?uestlove, Stanton Moore and The Benevento-Russo Duo, as well
as members of the Disco Biscuits, Ween and American Babies. American
Babies/RANA guitarist Scott Metzger has been named the event’s musical
director.
Though musicians tend to express their political views
through song, Bernstein promises the event will remain non-partisan. “There will be no pushing of agendas; in fact,
it’s not allowed. It’s about maintaining democracy.”
Since 2004, HeadCount has registered almost 60,000 voters.
The entire The Get Out and Vote Party will be webcast through iclips.net.
