Jane's Addiction's classic lineup will reunite for a
one-night only performance at the first-ever U.S. NME Awards. In addition to
singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, this
incarnation of Jane's Addiction will include founding bassist Eric Avery, who
has not performed with the group since 1991. Since then, Farrell, Navarro and
Perkins have headlined a handful of reunion tours with guest bassists such as
Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, Porno for Pyros' Martyn LeNoble and session
musician Chris Chaney.
The reunited quartet will receive the Godlike Genius Award
at the ceremony, which will be held at Los Angles' El Rey Theatre on April 23.
Jane's Addiction joins the likes of The Clash, New Order, Primal Scream and
Manic Street Preachers, who are among the acts to have picked up the Godlike
Genius prize at the UK
awards.
"I've chosen to
reject the prospects of reuniting in the past for personal and philosophical
reasons. I have always considered reunions to be a way to make a quick buck,
and it sells short my own experience of it the first time around," Avery
said in a statement."The reason I started to even consider this is because
it's honoring the past instead of trying to recreate it."
According to event organizers NME, Jane's Addiction will be
honored for their ability to "introduce American alternative music to the
mainstream, founding the touring Lollapalooza Festival and giving what frontman
Perry Farrell refers to as the 'alternative nation' a real cultural focus and
voice." Jane's Addiction most recently released Strays in 2003. Farrell is
no stranger to award ceremonies, having performed at the 2004 Jammys with
String Cheese Incident.
Strong rumors remain that Jane's Addiction is reuniting for
a summer tour.
