Guster will "go green" on its spring tour. The Boston-bred quartet has linked up with environmental action group Reverb to launch the second annual Campus Consciousness Tour at Winston-Salem, NC's Wake Forest University tomorrow. The nonprofit organization was founded by Guster guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner and his wife Lauren Sullivan in 2004 and has since worked with a striking range of musicians, from Dave Matthews Band to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Alanis Morissette to Jack Johnson to Bonnie Raitt, to make their tours more environmentally friendly.
As they do with each of Guster's tours, Reverb will "green" the tour itself by powering buses with clean-burning domestically made bio-diesel fuel, which has prevented nearly a hundred thousand pounds of carbon dioxide emissions since making the switch from regular diesel last spring. Since last spring, each of Guster's tours has been made "carbon-neutral" by purchasing renewable energy credits through the Native American owned renewable energy company, Native Energy. Over 2,100 tons of carbon dioxide have been neutralized through Guster's offset program - the equivalent of not driving 4.2 million miles or powering 262 homes for an entire year. The group's first Campus Consciousness Tour included a stop at the inaugural Green Apple Music & Arts Festival.
At each stop on Guster's spring tour, Reverb will also erect the Shift Consciousness Pavilion, an interactive eco-village featuring environmentally-themed booths and exhibits. The tour will also feature daytime events at each campus, including a "Town Hall Forum" organized by the Campus Climate Challenge and the Sustainable Endowments Institute. The tour’s environmental efforts are sponsored by Stonyfield Farm Shift.
"Each time we launch a tour, we try to find new ways to make it more green," Gardner says. "This tour will include various efforts from requesting eco-friendly products backstage to using rechargeable batteries for instruments on stage."
Guster is touring behind its new EP, Satellite. The mini album will feature Ganging up on the Sun's single "Satellite," plus the new songs "G Major," "Rise And Shine," "Timothy Leary" and "I'm Through." The disc will also include a remix of "Satellite" by the Astronauts, a live version of "Two Of Us," and a humorous cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Satellite is printed on FSC certified paper with soy ink, making it the band's first carbon-neutral release. As of press time, Guster's Campus Consciousness Tour is scheduled to wrap up April 29th at Baltimore, MD's Loyola College.
